A record-breaking 146 students were inducted into the GEHS chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) on Sunday, the largest induction in the school’s 3-year-history. This is an increase of 38 from the 108 inductees last year.
“Our students have worked hard to show high excellence in the classroom and in their activities,” NHS sponsor Christina Modrell said. “We are proud of their ability to keep their standards high and continue to push them to strive for excellence as a leader of our school.”
With the largest group yet, NHS sponsors hope to add additional service opportunities to engage members and expand its impact on the community.
“Each year we look at the number of students and evaluate our process,” Modrell said. “With the large amount of students involved, I’m hoping to create new activities to keep the students involved in service throughout the year.”
During the ceremony, students recited the NHS pledge and were recognized for fulfilling the four pillars of membership: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Each inductee also received a certificate of membership.
“It felt like a huge privilege to be inducted into NHS,” sophomore Chelsea Quindt said. “It was something that my family and I were very proud to be a part of.”
To apply for membership in the NHS, applicants must have a GPA above 3.5 and write three essays detailing how they fulfill the pillars of service, leadership and character. Once in the NHS, members must complete 10 service hours a year and fill out a leadership form.
