Curling up with a good book next to a window with the sun shining through, creating the purrrfect spot for a cat to sunbathe; it’s a scene that any cat person can envision easily. The Gretna Public Libray played on that vision by hosting a “Kitty Cafe” on Nov. 4.
Partnering with the Nebraska Humane Society and The Beanery, the library opened up their doors to not only humans, but also 10 fluffy, tiny kittens which were available for adoption. To add to the atmosphere, The Beanery set up a stand with coffee and hot chocolate for visitors.
“We were able to bring out 10 kittens that had been in foster care that had been spayed or neutered, microchipped, had their shots and were ready to be adopted,” NHS Vice President of Marketing, Pam Wiese, who worked the event, said
The two-hour event was a success with over 50 people in attendance and all 10 kittens being adopted.
“People were there ready to adopt,” Wiese said. “The first person that we adopted to had brought a crate, um a kennel, ready to go for a kitten and had lost one of her kittens, uh, had lost a cat not too long ago, so she was ready for a kitten. The last people that adopted kind of couldn’t decide and so they decided to take both of the kitties that were there. And so we ended up not having to bring anybody home so that was really nice.”
The atmosphere at the “Kitty Café” was filled with joy and excitement as the kittens purred and played, capturing the hearts of potential adopters. Children in attendance played with the kittens and the kittens’ toys as the sounds of shuffling of paperwork being filled out by new pet owners and NHS employees, and visitors ordering their drinks from The Beanery filled the normally quiet library with a warm buzz.
Adding to the warm, fuzzy feeling of the day was the fact that people were falling in love with their new, furry family members.
“She gives me something to look forward to when I get home,” said Melanie Wiese. “And I can give her unlimited kisses.”
