This past Thursday, both the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams’ district qualifiers competed for their chance to advance to state.

The girls’ team faced schools like Blair, Elkorn, Nebraska City, Omaha Duchesne Academy, Omaha Skutt Catholic, Platteview and Ralston. The boys’ team competed against Bennigton, Blair, Elkhorn, Lincoln Standing Bear, Nebraska City and Waverly.

In the end, the girls qualified two runners for State tomorrow, while the boys’ full varsity team and one additional runner qualified. The NSAA Class B State Championship will be held at Kearney Country Club.

Taegyn Brown, Reporter

Taegyn Brown is a sophomore and a second-year member of the Wingspan staff. She enjoys covering sports and values the friendships she has built with fellow staff members. This year, her goal is to continue growing as a journalist and strengthening her skills in reporting and writing. Outside of Wingspan, Taegyn stays busy as a member of the softball team, DECA, and as a team manager for tennis. In her free time, she also enjoys reading.

Leena Macklin, Reporter

Leena Macklin is a junior at GEHS and this is her second year on the Wingspan staff, where she serves as the Feature Editor. Last year, she won 7th place for Editorial Writing at the NSAA High School State Journalism competition. Additionally, she won numerous awards for graphics, editorial, review and feature story writing at the Nebraska Press Women High School Communications Conference. Macklin joined journalism for her love of writing and to continue her passion for writing throughout the year. She hopes to qualify for State this year and to continue improving her placements at the competition. She is excited for this year and having a bigger staff. Outside of journalism, she is involved in Cross Country, NHS and One Act. She hopes to continue writing after high school with a focus on creative writing. See more awards here.
