Despite ongoing construction on the Gretna High School (GHS) stadium, the first Griffin home game of the season is still scheduled to be played there on Sept. 12, according to Activities Director Matt Fritsche.
“Gretna High actually has a game the week before we do at home, and they’re anticipating playing there that week,” Fritsche said. “So right now, I don’t feel any stress.”
Questions about the project’s timeline emerged after the Aug. 22 football scrimmage was held at Gretna East.
“I was confused,” senior Ryleigh Phillippe said. “Why would you do it [construction] this close to the first home game? What are they supposed to do if it isn’t done in time?”
At this time, the administration hasn’t prepared an alternate location if construction is not completed in time.
“If we receive word within the next five to seven days, at that point we would make a plan,” Fritsche said. “I feel like we’re, right now, in good shape.”
The construction project began over the summer as a complete overhaul of the track facilities. Upgrades include a new running surface, fences and throwing areas.
“The track was sorely in need of an update due to its condition,” GHS Activities Director Matt Curtis said. “With that being said, the renovations that are underway will make our track facility one of the best in the Midwest and will serve as an attractive spot for different groups to host their meets when our student-athletes are not using it.”
