Securing another win for Gretna East, the JV 1 baseball team beat Elkhorn North’s JV team in a three-up three-down style in seven innings on Thursday, May 1.
Both teams came out of the gate strong on the mound, with starter sophomore Mason Hayduk pitching for the Griffins with an impressive strike count. In the four innings he pitched, he gave up one hit to North’s sophomore Colin Acker and zero runs, along with a total of 12 outs collected with the help of his defense in the field.
Hayduk recorded five strikeouts for the Griffins before being relieved by sophomore Logan Rolfes in the top of the fifth inning. Rolfes wasn’t far behind him, making his defense work while they collected all three outs in the field.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth inning that anyone was able to cross home plate. Scoring the only run of the game, junior Koby Modrell singled on a line drive to freshman left fielder Brody Briganti, allowing sophomore Carter Woodson to score. Modrell went 1-for-3 at the plate, but led the team with a single RBI.
Multiple hits were collected from players, sophomores Koa Stonebreaker, Trevor Kraegel, Colton Siliman, Woodson and juniors Nolan Iverson and Modrell, pushing the game along.
To close out the game, junior Andrew Dowd took the mound and, after two groundouts to bring the game closer to a shutout, North’s sophomore Grant Sutko hit a ground ball to third baseman Kraegel, resulting in an error for the defense. Shortly after, Stuko got caught stealing second by second baseman sophomore Colton Kuhl, and ended the game 1-0, leaving the JV 1 Griffins with one final game of their season.
This sets the team’s record at 13-4-1, before facing off at Elkhorn North against the Waverly Junior Varsity Vikings this Monday at 6:30 p.m., May 5.
