After they take a trip to the Emerald City at Prom on April 12, juniors and seniors are invited to Gretna East for the Disney-themed Post Prom. From 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., Post Prom attendees will have the opportunity to play games, participate in activities, win prizes and more. Tickets can be purchased here for $25 or in person in Christina Modrell’s room or the guidance office.
“We have tried to make it a fun time for everyone,” Post Prom Committee member Christina Modrell said. “It will be a good way to spend the rest of Prom night with friends and playing games.”
From 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., attendees will be able to participate in different activities, such as playing games like blackjack, poker, basketball, pickleball and yard games to watching movies, taking photos, eating and participating in inflatable activities such as different competitions and obstacles. The main entertainment for the night, from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., will be a hypnotist.
The committee plans to serve Raising Cane’s, Chick-Fil-A, Runza and more.
Beyond the food and activities, the event also offers a door prize for Griffin students. If a Gretna East junior or senior purchases a ticket before April 9, they will receive a random $25 gift card at the event. And while it is not required to purchase tickets in advance, attendees who purchase tickets at the door will not be eligible for the door prize. Additional prizes for other games range from an iPad, TVs, speakers, minifridges, a poker table, fishing poles, a sofa chair, a VR set, gift cards and more.
“I am very excited to get to enjoy the night with my friends and have lots of new experiences with the games and activities there, as it is my first Post Prom,” junior Kristin Tuff said.
However, safety remains a top priority for the night. Attendees will not be allowed to leave the building until 4 a.m. unless a student pre-arranges early departure by having their parent email [email protected] before the event begins or having their parent pick up them up in person. Parent phone calls to the school are not an accepted method of early departure. Also, re-entry is not allowed.
“One of the main goals is keeping everybody safe that night,” School Resource Officer Deputy Wes McVay said. “Drowsy driving is similar to impaired driving, so you put yourself at risk and others at risk when you drive when you’re extremely tired, and I’m guessing most people aren’t used to being up that late. So you put yourself and others at risk when you when you drive really tired.”
Also, students from other schools and underclassmen are permitted, but they will still need to purchase the $25 ticket. Similar to all other school-sponsored events like Homecoming and Prom, guests must be at least a freshman or, at most, a recent high school graduate under 20 years old. To bring an outside guest, students will need to fill out this Google Form and submit the approval form to Amanda Moultroup by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9th.
In addition to planning the activities and rules for the event, the committee has worked to fund Post Prom independently. Through donations from parents and local businesses, and fundraisers like craft fairs, candy grams and sports buttons, the Post Prom committee has been able to plan the event without Gretna High School, as there was a combined Prom and Post Prom last year.
“It is a fun experience that parents have worked hard on to make sure students stay safe on Prom night,” Modrell said.
