There’s no question that Timothée Chalamet is currently one of the most diverse and capable actors in Hollywood. His role as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” is one of his most complex yet. The movie, directed by James Mangold and released on Dec. 25, tells the story of how the well-known folk and rock artist, Bob Dylan rose to stardom with only a guitar, a revolutionary voice and a hunger for success. With supporting actors Edward Nortan, playing singer-songwriter Pete Seeger, and Elle Fanning, playing Dylan’s love interest Sylvie Russo, Dylan’s first few years in the music industry are creatively brought to life in a way that leaves viewers in awe of not only Dylan’s talent but also Chalamet’s.
The film introduces a 19-year-old Bob Dylan, newly arrived in New York City, meeting Pete Seeger, a fellow folk musician, who helps Dylan get signed by a label. Dylan became a national sensation after recording an album of covers and his music, and as his fame and passion grew, he began tumultuous relationships with a fellow New Yorker, Sylvie Russo, and musician Joan Baez, played by Monica Barbaro. Soon, he began to write rock music, and eventually, Dylan performed it at a Folk Festival, where he was booed off stage because of how he “turned his back on folk music.”
While Chalamet is not inexperienced in playing music-centered roles, a lot of preparation went into becoming Bob Dylan as he spent about five years focusing on his guitar, harmonica and singing skills to portray Dylan. This paid off as Chalamet’s performance is impressive at the least, astounding at best. He filled the shoes of the musician in a very authentic way, making audiences deeply connect with Dylan, his music and his story. Songs like “The Times they are A-Changin” and “Blowing in the Wind” are achingly beautiful with Chalamet’s voice bringing them a new sort of life.
In addition to Chalamet’s stunning performance, the movie addresses many impactful themes, among them being how important it is to remember the past but to also keep looking to the future. Dylan took a leap of faith when performing a new style of music at the Newport Folk Festival and successfully changed the direction of his music career. While his rock albums have been artfully made, his folk music is still played around the world and continues to bring hope to those who listen and a look into Dylan’s life and mind.
“A Complete Unknown” has stolen the hearts of die-hard Bob Dylan fans, as well as those who walked into the theater barely knowing who he is. It is a love letter to classic folk and is sure to become many’s favorite film, as it leaves the audience with a feeling of connection and inspiration to change their world, especially if all it takes is a leap of faith.
