The votes have been tallied. Just over a month after senior Drew Rhoades surprised fans by debuting the school’s first mascot and a naming contest, the mascot has been named.
With just under 50% of the 424 total votes submitted, his name is officially Griffey.
The three final names on the ballot were Grittee, Griff and Griffey. The battle was close with Griffey barely beating out Griff for the win by exactly 21 votes. This wasn’t the first time students had a voice in making historical decisions for the school.
“That’s the awesome part for every one of our students who’ve been a part of Gretna East, especially our juniors and our seniors this year,” Athletic Director Ryan Garder said. “You guys were able to select a fight song, and now you’re able to pick a mascot name. No other kids in school history will be able to make those kinds of decisions.”
In the same Google Form, over 50 students expressed interest in becoming the mascot. Those students will receive information regarding the next steps in possibly becoming the mascot in the near future.
“Those students that responded with ‘yes’ will be receiving an email just to talk about what commitment might look like, and the type of person that’s needed,” Garder said.
The first to ever wear the suit, Rhoades, hopes his beginnings can inspire others to come.
“I hope it is represented as a symbol of our school that shows high energy and school spirit,” he said. “The next mascot needs to always be showing emotion based on the play, positive or negative, and show off their dance moves.”
The plan is for Griffey to become a beloved staple in the Gretna East community and an important part of the school’s tradition. Plans are still in the works for an official appearance schedule.
